Why should I register my business?
The benefits of registering your business by far outweighs the contrary, regardless of the size or turnover of your business. Tax benefits, personal asset protection, business name protection and potential financial assistance, to name only a few. Registering your business shows that you are serious about your business and profession. Would you like to do business with someone that does not seem professional?
We recommend that you register for SARS e-filing as soon as possible, but you would not necessarily require this until you have to submit your first Tax Return within 12 months of your first Financial Year End. If you would like to register for VAT, PAYE, UIF, SDL or require a Tax Compliance Status (Letter of Good Standing), you need to be registered for SARS e-filing first.
Why must my I have a business bank account?
This is a SARS requirement. It is simply to separate your personal finances from your business finances. Not complying with this could lead to an audit and legal action should you be found liable for withholding income from SARS.
All employers must register with the Compensation Fund and contribute a yearly fee, calculated according to employee salaries earned, and risk associated with their tasks. The fund insures employees against occupational injury, disease or death. Find out if you are liable by contacting PMMG.
Why should I register a domain?
Your domain is the address of your website that would be typed into the URL bar of a browser. You would typically like to register a domain exactly the same as your business name, e.g. businessname.co.za or businessname.com. The .za refers to the internet country code for South Africa, while .com is the most recognizable domain suffix internationally. There are many other options to choose from as well.
You do not have to register for VAT when you register your business. Only when your estimated income for a 12-month period exceeds R1 million, it becomes compulsory to register for VAT. However, if you want to claim input VAT on the sale of products or services under the standard (15%) or zero rate, you need to be registered for VAT when your turnover exceeds R50 000 per annum.
Who should apply for a B-BBEE Certificate?
The main benefit of a B-BBEE certificate is that it would enable you to conduct business with the Public Sector. Government or public institutions will allocate a score to tenders on the B-BBEE level obtained by your company. Any enterprise with an annual turnover smaller than R10 million would be exempt from applying for a B-BBEE certificate and is automatically deemed a B-BBEE status of “Level four contributor.”
E-mail and website hosting is required when you want to setup your business emails or want to make your website available for the world to see. Your emails and website will be backed up on a server managed by your hosting provider.
